Puella Magi Madoka Magica is an original anime project created by the Magica Quartet (Akiyuki Shinbo, Ume Aoki, Gen Urobuchi, and producer Atsuhiro Iwakami). The anime premiered in January 2011 and ran until April of the same year, with a total of 12 episodes (the broadcast of the final two episodes was delayed due to the Great East Japan Earthquake).
Although the anime project wrapped up the story, the series also spawned multiple manga series (adaptations and spin-offs), a novel by Nitroplus, a dedicated magazine, and video games. Two recap movies were released in October of 2012. They were followed by a third movie, titled Rebellion, which premiered in October 2013. The movie featured a new original story and is the prequel to Walpurgisnacht.
It’s worth noting that the Magia Record spin-off story spawned an anime adaptation (also by studio SHAFT) and a mobile game. The anime ended earlier this year.
